112 – Sleep

A:  I haven’t been sleeping well lately.  I’m tired all day but I can’t seem to fall asleep at night.

B:  Have you had problems with insomnia before?

A:  I’ve always been a light sleeper but I’ve never experienced anything like this.  It’s been like this for over 2 months now.  It started after I got my new job. 

B:  Is the job causing you much stress?  Worrying or thinking too much can negatively affect people’s sleep.

A:  I don’t think so.  It’s a really relaxing job and I don’t think about it too much when I’m home.  The only thing I can think of is that I drink more coffee now than I used to.  I didn’t think that would be much of a problem since I don’t drink any after I get home. 

B:  Caffeine stays in the system for a long time.  Try not drinking any coffee past noon.  You might also want to do some yoga or other relaxation techniques before bed.  You want to be in a relaxed state well before you get into bed.  It will make falling asleep much easier. 

A:  What about drinking alcohol before bed.  I find it helps me sleep.

B:  You can if you want, but don’t have too much.  Too much alcohol will decrease the quality of REM sleep.  

 


Insomnia:  A person with insomnia has a very difficult time sleeping or getting enough sleep.  They often lie awake in bed, wishing they could fall asleep.  A person with insomnia is called an insomniac.

Light sleeper:  A light sleeper is a person who is very easy to wake up.  A light sleeper will wake up quickly after hearing even a little bit of noise.

Negatively affect:  If something "negatively affects" something else it means it has a negative influence on it.  Smoking cigarettes negatively affect a person’s health.

System:  In medicine, we often refer to the body as a "system". 

Too much alcohol isn’t good for the system. 

Relaxation techniques:  Relaxation tecniques are things you can do to relax.  Yoga, listening to soft music, and slow deep breathing are all examples of relaxation techniques.

REM sleep:  REM sleep stands for Rapid Eye Movement.  It is a phase of sleep where a person moves their eyes really quickly.  It is not very well understood, but most experts believe it is a very important phase of sleep.

    hi guys in new here and now im going to write for first time here
    i sleep very very nice after dont drink any coffe,before that i could not sleep and also take a nap because the caffeine is so bad for my system.
    when i was in scotlald i discovered the tea,before it i´ve not never try that and i think that tea is better for my systen and now i can sleep so good
    if someone have a problem with the coffe,try wiht tea and so there are a lot of flavors of tea
    i sorry for my english is so bad but im here to enjoy it

    I have already had this problem . I was all the day tired , but couldn\’t sleep good at night . But these days I go to the gym and it helps me to sleep very well.
    I suggest all to try it.

    Hello guys! Great lesson again! 10 sweet minutes of the fun english! Love the show! And I have the idea about a new lesson topic! Could you tell us about the history of development of \"china232\" please! Why did you guys decide to start this project, what the main obstacles did you face to when you got started and so on. I\’m sure you could use some great vocab within this topic! Maybe you could give us some statistics about growth of the listener’s audience… (btw, If my memory serves me correctly you guys promised to tell us about some statistics during one of the past lessons, so? :o ) as you said before, less talk, more action)

    Sorry guys if I’ve hurt your feelings:) I don\’t really want to assault you. It\’s just an idea, just a suggestion. I understand that my idea is out of the typical format of a lesson. But I\’m really interesting in the china232 project story. The project is a great instrument to improving english day by day.

    And also as you can see I\’m trying to practice my english using the great vocabulary you\’ve gave us before! Thanks a lot! Great job!

    short ,sweet, straightforward and a very good one………

    i find sleep very hard to come by and find it difficult to wake up early…
    i take in no caffeine nor alcohol….besides surfing net, one of the things i most commonly do is listen to podcasts like china232 and others during nights….

    and i liked that idea of maxim, we are eager to know about you guys and your projects..

    Great stuff, I want to say.

    The only thing that dissapoints me is 100 lessons against 1000 at Jeff McQuillan’s (in the same period of time I think).

    Excellent lesson (I am trying to learn Spanish, so I know what a good lesson could look like) but it is a bit ‘light’ on content. Insomnia is a serious affliction if it turns chronic – which it often does. The anticipatory anxiety alone of having yet another one of those nights from hell, can keep people from avoiding going to bed. There are many folk-type remedies to combat insomnia before the big guns of sleep-medication come into play. Unfortunately they share a common liability: Insomnia is oftentimes not a disease in itself. Rather it is a symptom, a messenger of something else being out of balance. Fighting insomnia without knowing the causes behind it is like shooting the messenger. Not a good idea. Unfortunately (western) health care providing systems cannot be trusted. For them insomnia is rapidly evolving into a multi billion market that they ‘harvest’ without concern for the welfare of their patients. That goes as far as passive suppression of recent scientific findings. ( Canadians isolated eye cells that are blue sensitive; blue light signals to the brain’s circadian clock that it is midday – melatonin output is inhibited, and sleep endangered. Another study links artificial sweeteners to reduced melatonin – our bodies’ sleep hormone.) Especially young people spend unprecedented amounts of time staring into screens with high blue content.
