127 – Guys and Girls

In this ESL Podcast we talk about guys and girls and relationships. Learn slang and daily conversation skills in English and enjoy this free English lesson.

A:  What are you doing later?

B:  My girlfriend is dragging me to the opening of the new Apple store in Shanghai.  Her birthday is in a week and I know she’d love a new laptop.

A:  The stores on the mainland are super expensive.  You can save a lot if you buy one in Hong Kong.

B:  I’m not looking to save a couple of bucks.  Our relationship is on the rocks and I can feel I need to shell out for a decent birthday gift if I want to save it.  I’ll probably take her on a trip too.

A:  What happened?  I thought you guys were doing really well.

B:  I’ve been a bit distant lately and she can feel it.  We’ve been going out for 2 years now and it’s gotten a bit stale.  She says it feels like I don’t have both feet in the relationship.  A lot of other guys are after her and I can feel I need to start giving her more attention if we’re going to make it.

Dragging me
:
If someone “drags you” to something it means that they force you to go somewhere you really don’t want to go.
I had to drag my girlfriend to come watch the basketball game with us at the bar.  What about you?

Mainland:  The “mainland” refers to the mainland of China.  It talks about all of China not including Hong Kong and Taiwan.

On the rocks If a relationship is “on the rocks” it means that it is not doing very well and there might be a future break up.

Last year their relationship was on the rocks but they got through the hard times and now they are going to get married.

Shell out
If you “shell out” money it means you pay for something.

He’s super cheap.  He doesn’t shell out for anything.

Distant
If someone is “distant” in a relationship it means that it seems they are not giving the relationship much attention.  If someone seems “distant” it means it feels like their mind is somewhere else and it’s difficult to communicate with them.  It also might mean they haven’t contacted you in a long time.  It really depends on the context.
He’s been really distant since he got married.  I haven’t heard from him in over 3 months.

He seems really distant lately.  We went out for coffee a couple weeks ago and he said almost nothing.  I wonder what the problem is.

Stale
If a relationship is “stale” it means it is going through a boring phase.  Nothing seems new or exciting anymore.

I don’t have both feet in the relationship
:  If someone doesn’t have “both feet in something” it means that they haven’t made a full commitment and given it a 100% focus.

You have to have both feet in your relationship or it will certainly fail.

After
If someone is “after” your girlfriend it means that they are chasing her and want to date her.

Beautiful girls always have a bunch of guys after them.  That’s never going to change.

Make it
:  If you “make it” in a relationship it means that you were successful and didn’t break up.  If you make it in business it means that you made a lot of money.  “Making it” basically means that you were successful at something.  If you understand that it should be easy to understand the meaning in context.

    Hi guys,

I just would like to say that it’s been a while since I first met you and I thank God to have people as you teaching us English for free and in a unique way I’ve never met on the Internet. It’s a shame that my MP3 is broken and I couldn’t buy another one yet, but when I had it I used to listen to you everyday while commuting. I get a lot out of your podcasts. The people who learn English should know you. I might be wrong but I didn’t see any share buttons on this page. You know, if you want more people to know you, we, big fans of you guys, could help spreading the word.

I loved the podcast and I’m going to post it on my Twitter.

I recently discover that you Add has to write down all the words, all the phrases what you’ll talking about in the pod. Poor guy, And is babbling a lot. I have initiated study English in this week and found this podcast “Guys and Girls” – a free lesson. I’ve been thinking: Why not to become to a VIP lesson with the complete transcription – I kicking myself to understand what the hell are you saying in the finals phrases, some words I just can’t get it. Too much missing words.

Hey, you’re listening to china232dotcom. Here on back here free session at china232dotcom, we have not been here, I’m sure you noticed in, and probably about six months, we’ve be going crazy and the VIP room and a little bit lazy on free session Add…. I suppose we could say that, but we’ve been just really focus on VIP session, not you guys aren’t important…In fact, we have an little bit announcement right now, you can go to the website and get a couple of free lessons of the VIP session, so you may check out. Yeah, just go to the website china232dotcom, sign up and just give us your e-mail, and then you’ll get two free lessons plus the whole transcript with a really good learning way, and we give you this five-day-email-course … methodic do it, and I think that is enough obvious to understand we can make our own decisions. …Thereby, we have a awesome dialog today and this dialog is about a friend of mine and his girlfriend. Actually both of them are my friends now but the guy was originally my friend and they been together about two years and that time of the relationship if you’ve never been one…. you probably already know. That’s a difficult phase to me and because you not already sure if you are gonna get married, you and missed the phase they going thorough can do in real life, good thing you both native speaker you can have a very boring time in a relationship is starting fighting. And this is the phase that you’re going thorough can do in real life, listening to, super hunger, talking about them. I don’t use their names, but it’s pretty obvious some topics. What a free lesson I guest I forget them because some good advices, I think. I’m really sure you can have pretty much obvious in some topics though. Think about what can happen our relationship if go wrong. I certainly know, our relationships will go wrong especially after two-year-mark together. It’s hard to get it, Still fighting over. OK…. So we ……jump right into the dialog and then get talking about it.

A: What are you doing later?

B: My girlfriend is dragging me to the opening of the new Apple store in Shanghai. Her birthday is in a week and I know she’d love a new laptop.

Already now was the dialog and of course very realistic one because is about a couple of friends… and their life relationship. Yeah, in first term we have Add is: dragging me. And if someone “drags you” to something it means that they force you to go somewhere you really don’t want to go.
So, in my case, in my own life, I could say “I had to drag my girlfriend to come watch the basketball game with us at the bar.” And luckly now she says she likes to watch basketball but that time, she hated it, and really I had to force other girl use a lot a …trips, Oh, atleast she pretends she likes make so easy europe atleast
    04:16.3
    04:29.6
Ok, the next we have Mainland: The “mainland” refers to the mainland of China. It talks about all of China not including Hong Kong and Taiwan. Right, so does the new Apple store in Shanghai is gonna be too soon and they are very expensive like we said in dialog,.. and so The “mainland” mainland stores, the mainland it talks about just China without Hong Kong and Taiwan. The mainland not stop and see.

The next phrase we have one more interesting. On the rocks: If a relationship is “on the rocks” it means that it is not doing very well and there might be a break up in a future. Right, so a relationship is on the rocks it is not doing very well, they fight
    05:41.2
So another couple I could say: Last year their relationship was on the rocks but they got through the hard times and now they are going to get married. And actually this couple is already married
    05:51.0
    06:39.3
Shell out: If you “shell out” money it means you pay for something. I think I talk about cheap guy or cheap girl, I guess you usually guys. He’s super cheap. He doesn’t shell out for anything. He doesn’t pay for anythink.

My friend said he needed to shell out for a new laptop for his girlfriend because she likes to get presents, and she is not really a gold bigger, she is not kinda girl that really needs all the money, all the gifts, but their relationship are on the rocks. She is not very happy with him with a laptop and probably make her happy for at least a day or two. I can totally understand….
    07:43
Pretty sweet. Very interesting Add, s
And the next one is Distant. This an excellent term, a sex word….
    07:57.5
    08:31.7
He seems really distant lately. We went out for coffee a couple weeks ago and he said almost nothing. I wonder what the problem is. In the second case, I actually fisically ….with the friend….

Engaged the conversation, it is not saying very much. ……. my question?
    09:04.0

The next phrase we have here is Stale: If a relationship is “stale” it means it is going through a boring phase. Nothing seems new or exciting anymore.

    09:57
In the next phrase, we have here I don’t have both feet in the relationship: If someone doesn’t have “both feet in something” it means that they haven’t made a full commitment and given it a 100% focus. So I could say: You have to have both feet in your relationship or it will certainly fail.
    10:17

    11:18.7
Maybe we should jump into next term which is After: If someone is “after” your girlfriend it means that they are chasing her and want to date her. Atleast…
    11:37.5
Beautiful girls always have a bunch of guys after them. That’s never going to change.
    12:32

And the last we have Make it: If you “make it” in a relationship it means that you were successful and didn’t break up. If you make it in business it means that you made a lot of money. “Making it” basically means that you were successful at something. If you understand that it should be easy to understand the meaning in context.

Hey, you’re listening to china232dotcom. Here we back here on the free section at china232dotcom, we have not been here, I’m sure you not what the problem is. In the second case, I actually physically with the friend but when we sitting together hading coffee it seems like his mind somewhere else he is not engaged the conversation, it is not saying very much when you ask him a question. He probably answer it but you feel but it is not the same as you used to be and you ‘ve just not very closed any more for some reason.

Ok the next phrase we have here is Stale: If a relationship is “stale” it means it is going through a boring phase. Nothing seems new or exciting anymore.

In the next phrase, we have here I don’t have both feet in the relationship: If someone doesn’t have “both feet in something” it means that they haven’t made a full commitment and given it a 100% focus. So I could say: You have to have both feet in your relationship or it will certainly fail.

Maybe we should jump into next term which is After: If someone is “after” your girlfriend it means that they are chasing her and want to date her. Atleast…

And the last we have Make it: If you “make it” in a relationship it means that you were successful and didn’t break up. If you make it in business it means that you made a lot of money. “Making it” basically means that you were successful at something. If you understand that it should be easy to understand the meaning of make it in any context you just succeeded you did well you made it you got through the hard time and everything work do.
