A: How’s life back in the US?
B: Lot’s of sitting around. There was a blizzard here a few days ago so I haven’t been able to go outside. A: How have the workouts been? B: Pretty much non-existent since the first day back. I’ve been making a lot of questionable food choices as well. A: I’m guessing you are spending a lot of time horizontal watching sports in high def? B: That’s essentially all I’ve been doing. I’m hoping I’ll be able to turn things around soon so I don’t come back looking like a pig. A: Just stay out of the cupboards!

Phrases and Vocabulary used:
Sitting Around: This is a slang phrase that refers to doing very little. If you said "I just sat around all weekend" it means that you didn’t really do anything. You probably just stayed home and watched TV or surfed the internet. You didn’t do anything worth mentioning.
Blizzard: A blizzard is a really bad snow storm. often roads and schools are closed during a blizzard.
Non-existant: this means that they don’t happen. Pretty much "non existant" means that they happen very rarely.
Questionable: If something is "questionable" it means that it is unclear. We often use this word in spoken english to describe a poor decision. If you say, "that was a questionable decision" you probably mean that it was a poor one.
Horizontal: If a person is "horizontal" it means they are lying down. People often lie down on the couch while watching TV. Horizontal is a funny way to describe this.
High Def: This is short for "high definition" TV. This is talking about the new technology that makes some new TV stations very clear.
Turn things around: "Turning things around" means to change a bad situation to a good one.
A company that has been losing money might hire a new CEO to try to turn things around.

What a great site - I’ll be using it with my advanced students. I particularly like the fact that one of you sounds like Steven Wright, even though that does remind me of Reservoir Dogs.

Hello, this is Ira from Brazil. Hope this finds you in fine fettle.
I’m just sitting around here in Brazil. Since I have moved to Itu/SP, I’ve been studying English in a fun way, not working, just staying at home. And I discover how this world can be big and small at the same time, I mean with all this technology around us it become easier to talk to people and make some really good friends. And I discover you guys, and I really enjoy your lessons. Unfortunately I don’t have a HIGH DEF to watch but I’d rather go to the Internet and learn English with you.
Cheers for now,
Ira

My students have complained about the complete lack of expression in your voices. They find it odd. I have to say I agree. Part of what they are trying to absorb is the nuance of the expression. You sound as though you have lost the will to live. Maybe try a little more expression in your voice.
January 26th, 2009 at 8:52 pm
I’d say don’t worry about the lack of expression, if that’s the way you guys really talk. Authentic is authentic, even if it sounds to some people (”Jeff,” in the previous comment) like you’ve lost the will to live.
Then again, if you’re deliberately changing your voices to slow them down, then maybe Jeff has a point.
Either way, I like this site, which I just came across. I teach English in Costa Rica, and I’m sure my students will find it useful. Keep up the good work!

Hello friends,
I must say, you people are too good. But, I want to ask you for something and would be really happy if you could just help me out by emails or by posting some podcasts of english songs. I like listening to english songs. But, sometimes I get annoyed when I’m not able to understand the meaning of the lyrics.
So, I want you to help me with this.
Thank you!

Hi, guys. Your podcast is great and useful. But I have to give you some suggestions: Please, give us a script of the conversations in pdf. It will be useful and we can print it for better improvement (and take it anywhere). Keep on with your fantastic job. Brazil students thanks you very much.

Your lesson made me realize that I’ve been leading a questionable life.. I wasted my years running after non-existent hopes and chasing illusions.. I wonder if I’ll be able to turn things around ? Maybe, I will with ” a little help from my friends ” Egyptophile the romantic barbarian.
